# Permission groups

A permission group defines a set of rules for accessing and working with a group of datasets. They allow your organization to develop and assign robust, standardized access procedures for your datasets. Permission groups are also the only way to assign [requirements](/reference/organizations/requirements.md) to a dataset. 

You can view all of your organization's permission groups on the **Permission groups** section of the administrator panel.

## Configuring permission groups

All permission groups must have a name that is unique within the organization. Permission group names are not visible to researchers — they are only for administrators to view and understand the purpose of the permission group.

Permission groups operate similarly to the [access configuration on datasets](/reference/data-access/configuring-access.md) — you can control which access levels are public, which levels require direct access, and what [usage rules](/reference/data-access/usage-rules.md) are present on the dataset. However, with permission groups you can also assign [requirements](/reference/organizations/requirements.md) which must be approved before a user can have access at a particular level.

A requirement can only exist once within a permission group, and all requirements are cumulative across access levels. That is, in order for a user to get data access, they must have completed all requirements for the "data" access level *and* all preceding levels.

## Assigning dataset to permission groups

Datasets must be assigned to permission groups in order for the permission group's configuration to apply to them. Datasets may only have one permission group. You can assign datasets to a permission group in bulk on the [Datasets](/reference/organizations/datasets.md) tab of your administrator panel or individually via the [dataset access configuration interface](/reference/data-access/configuring-access.md#permission-groups).
