# Variable creation methods

When using a [create variables](https://docs.redivis.com/reference/workflows/transforms/step-create-variables) step (or when creating aggregate variables in an [aggregation](https://docs.redivis.com/reference/workflows/transforms/step-aggregate) or [pivot](https://docs.redivis.com/reference/workflows/transforms/step-pivot) step) you will need to select a method to specify how the variable will be created.
